Lord Daresbury

Chairman of Investment Committee and Advisory Committee

Peter Daresbury has held numerous executive positions, including CEO from 1993 to 2000 of the Greenalls Group, which had an annual turnover of £983million and a FTSE market capitalisation of £1.7 billion. In 2000 the company was re-named The De Vere Group plc, and Lord Daresbury became Non-Executive Chairman until he stood down in 2006. Lord Daresbury has also served as Non-Executive Chairman of Kazakhgold Group Ltd from 2005-2007 and Executive Chairman of Highland Gold from 2002 to 2004. Peter is currently Chairman of AIM listed Nasstar plc. Current directorships include Mallett plc and Sumatra Copper and Gold Ltd., and in addition, since 2005, Peter has served as senior advisor to Fleming Family and Partners and sits on the investment committee of Fleming Private Equity.

Managing Partner

James Dow –

James has over 20 years’ private equity experience. He joined KPMG in 1982, qualifying as a chartered accountant in 1985. In 1990 he joined the KPMG Corporate Finance team, becoming a Partner in 1996 and in 2000 was appointed in charge of the North West region of KPMG’s corporate finance business. As a partner in the corporate finance business, James had specific responsibility for deal origination and marketing. James left KPMG Corporate Finance in 2002 to establish Dow Schofield Watts and PHD Equity Partners in 2008.

James is the co-author of Private Equity: Law and Practice and specialises in deal structuring. James was voted dealmaker of the year 2006 in the Insider Deal Awards. James is also a non-executive director of The Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts.

At the recent EN’s North West Deals of the Year 2012 Awards, James won both Corporate Financier of the Year & Deal Maker of the Year.



Andy Dodd –

Andy joined as a Partner in May 2003. Andy has over a decade of private equity experience. Starting his career with Coopers and Lybrand in 1995, he qualified as a chartered accountant. In 1998 Andy joined KPMG Corporate Finance working principally in deal origination and advising on a wide range of private equity transactions.

Andy helped raise PHD Equity Partners’ first equity fund in 2008, its 2012 debt fund and headed the fund raising for PHD Equity Partners latest equity fund in 2014.  He currently looks after PHD Equity Partners investment in Barber of Sheffield.




Roger Esler –

Roger has specific responsibility for the firm’s Yorkshire & the North East office and team.
Following graduation from Sheffield University and qualifying as a Chartered Accountant with Grant Thornton, Roger then gained over 23 years corporate finance experience at SG Hambros, KPMG and Deloitte (where he was a partner for over a decade), before joining the DSW Group in 2012.

Roger has extensive experience of private equity having advised on MBOs and development capital transactions in a range of sectors, together with formulating and executing exit and refinancing strategies.




Tony Meakin –

Prior to joining PHD Equity Partners, Oxford graduate Tony, was previously at Ernst & Young in both Liverpool and Manchester, working both in audit and as part of the forensic team.

Tony has extensive financial modelling skills and contribution have been invaluable to a number of high profile transactions including the £112m sale of Multisol to Brenntag and working with the management team on the £78.3m MBO of Ideal World (funded by Inflexion Private Equity).

Tony is a Director of PHD Equity Partners, and works with our investors and identifies investment opportunities in SMEs.



Tony Norwood –

After qualifying as a Chartered Accountant with PwC in 2000, Tony initially moved into banking before assuming senior roles within Bank of Scotland Integrated Finance and private equity firm LDC, based in Yorkshire. During this time Tony led the buy-outs and equity investment into various businesses across the region.

He left LDC in 2012 and moved into the corporate travel industry with TD Travel. He originally joined as Commercial Director and led the company’s merger (and associated fund raising) with Hotelscene in 2013, creating a £100m turnover Top 20 travel management company in the process with the business then rebranding as CTI. He subsequently fulfilled the roles of Finance Director and, most recently, COO, assuming responsibility for operational strategy and integration before joining Dow Schofield Watts Corporate Finance in March 2015.



Philip Price –

Philip Price has over 15 years’ private equity experience. He joined KPMG in 1993, qualifying in 1996. Following a short secondment to KPMG Perth, Western Australia, he joined KPMG Corporate Finance in 1997 in Liverpool and moved to KPMG Corporate Finance, Manchester in 2000. At KPMG he advised on a wide range of M&A and Private Equity transactions. Philip joined in June 2003.

Philip has been central to a number of buyouts, investments and the successful exit for PHD Equity Partners of Liberty Services.




Craig Richardson –

Craig has over 20 years’ experience advising SME’s in M&A, including private equity experience. He joined KPMG Corporate Finance in 1996 after spending three years undertaking due diligence post qualifying as a chartered accountant with KPMG in 1992.

Craig joined in May 2006 after spending two years at a provincial accountancy firm establishing a corporate advisory business.

Craig is a previous winner of North West Insider awards for Corporate Finance Advisor of the Year and Dealmaker of the Year in Lancashire.

Craig manages PHD Equity Partners’ investment in Vickers Electronics and Modern Rugs. He is also instrumental in deal origination and identification of businesses for PHD Equity Partners.



Jon Schofield –

Jon Schofield has nearly twenty years’ private equity experience. After joining KPMG in 1982, he qualified as a chartered accountant in 1985 and moved into KPMG Corporate Finance in 1990.

In 1994 Jon joined England Worthside Limited; a 3i backed buy-out as Finance Director. After exiting from the buyout, Jon became a partner in Grant Thornton in 1995 where he headed up the North of England Transaction Services Team, advising corporates and financial institutions.

In 1999, Jon joined Cammell Laird Holdings plc as Finance Director and subsequently appointed Acting Chief Executive. Post Cammell Laird, Jon acted as a company consultant before joining in 2002.

Jon is also a non-executive director of Atlantic & Peninsula Marine Services Ltd, Dee Valley Group Plc and The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.



Mark Watts –

Mark Watts has over twenty years’ private equity experience. He joined KPMG, qualifying as a chartered accountant in 1991 and transferring to corporate finance in 1992 and enjoyed a secondment with NatWest Ventures, prior to joining Hill Samuel Bank in 1995.

Mark subsequently joined Old Mutual Securities where he was a corporate finance director advising on “public to privates”, AIM listings and private equity transactions. Mark left Old Mutual Securities in 2002 to co-found Dow Schofield Watts.

Mark was responsible for the PHD Equity Partners investment in Energy Solutions Group, until the recent exit to SSE plc.



Adam Dow



Adam Dow –

A graduate of The University of Leeds, Adam Dow joined PHD Equity Partners in September 2014 as an Investment Executive. Adam’s main remit is to identify and assess investment opportunities in SMEs for PHD Equity Partners.

Additionally, Adam delivers day to day support to the PHD Equity Partners.





David Riley –

David has over 20 years’ experience working in the restructuring and turnaround profession. Latterly David held board level responsibility for mergers and acquisitions at Bibby Financial Services including the disposal of their Australia and New Zealand business.

Prior to that David was a partner at Grant Thornton in Manchester leading the restructuring and national asset based lending team. David’s experience includes accelerated acquisitions and disposals in the private equity space, operational turnaround and change management.
